Tarot Cards and the Archetypes of Self Love!
I often talk about the symbolism of the Tarot being archetypes. And some of you may ask, “What exactly is an archetype?” Well, an archetype is a symbol or a pattern of behavior that is Universally understood by all of humanity. The Archetypes are pieces of who we are, and to cultivate with Tarot Archetypes would be to develop a deep Self Love for every aspect of ourselves! Archetypes like “the Fool,” “the wise old man”, “the hermit”, “cupid”, and the “grim reaper” have the potency to evoke deep feelings in each of us and expose and open aspects of our character to full expression. It is said that in the Tarot all of the Major Arcana or Trump cards represent every piece of our human soul and spiritual development. If we can learn to incorporate and assimilate every Trump Card into our consciousness we would be cultivating a deep Self Love for every aspect of who we are! This is my goal and vision for you, the cultivation of Self Love with the Tarot!
For example if you were to pull the Hermit Card in a Tarot Reading, one person may be excited at the prospect of solitude, and taking time to oneself to introspect and meditate. Meanwhile another person may be scared of being alone or outcast. Either way, each individual would be faced with spending time with oneself, and the archetype of the “wise old man”, solitude, or aloneness. The question is, “How do we embrace this archetype with Self Love?” To a meditator, the Hermit archetype may come easy. While on the other hand, to a person who always prefers the company of others, spending time with oneself and appreciating one’s own company could prove quite challenging. When we pull a particular Tarot Card it is as if the Universe is encouraging us to cultivate a love for this particular aspect of oneself, activate the archetype, and grow!
Another example would be the Fool Card. The Fool is my favorite Tarot Card! To some people they pull the Fool and immediately think, “I don’t want to be a fool. I don’t want to be called a fool or become a fool!“ Or, “Look at that idiot, he is about to fall!” A pessimist or fearful person might feel these negative things. A person like this hasn’t come to terms with the reality that we will all make mistakes, and that we must take risks in order to grow! Meanwhile, another individual may pull the Fool Card in a Reading and immediately resonate with the Fool’s humor, his carefree nature, and his faith, and interest in adventure. This is the attitude of an optimist, a person who in the moment, and a person who has great faith that the Universe will care for him! Regardless of the disposition of the person who pulls the Tarot Card, the Universe encourages you to cultivate this sense of faith, self-confidence, Self Love, and trust when you pull the Fool Card.
If one was to pull the Lovers Card, regardless of the disposition of the person who was getting the Tarot Reading, most people seem to be happy at the idea of finding a Love or a Lover. A Lover serves as a mirror to you so that you can see and develop sides of yourself that may be latent or inactive. It is said that opposites attract. Not only may the Lovers Card indicate an exciting Love relationship, but it also indicates a deep relationship with oneself. The Lovers Card represents a deep alchemical marriage between our spirit and soul, the ida and pingala in Hindu religion, or the anima and animus in Jungian psychology. It represents an integration of our masculine and feminine qualities. The spirit or inspired self and the soul or feeling self may have been at odds. The spirit may think the soul is a drag. And the soul may think the spirit doesn’t really understand the depths of feeling. The real question of this card is how do we make the spirit and the soul in our nature best friends? How do we make the ida and pingala dance? How do we marry the anima to the animus? The Lovers Tarot Card represents the development of a deep love for oneself, along with the possibility that a significant other can bring these qualities in us out, and allow them to integrate!
Thus we see that the Tarot is telling a story about the innermost part of who we are, and is admonishing us to integration and Self Love.
